Just as all of us have individual personalities, so all organisations have a culture, as unique as a thumbprint. It is now widely believed that culture or 'climate' influences company performance. However, there is no such thing as a 'right' or 'wrong' culture. The test of a corporate culture is the extent to which it supports and drives business strategy.

Q&A, in association with Clarke Consultants, has developed a Culture Diagnostic, that can be used to monitor culture across different units and locations within the organisation to compare what is actually seen now with what people would like to see in the future. This enables the client organisation to identify differences between units over time and to foster a positive environment.

The Culture Diagnostic consists of a total of eleven scales, ten of which are generally considered by successful organisations to be related to excellent business performance, and an eleventh scale (Ownership), which is optional, and reflects interest in monitoring perceptions of stock/share benefits and employee ownership.

The results can be expressed as a 'spider' diagram, as shown in the following figure, which vividly portrays how people see the culture now and how they would like to see it in the future for the eleven scales.
