An attitude is 'a state of readiness, a tendency to respond in a certain manner when confronted with certain stimuli'. One method of measuring people's attitudes is in the form of an attitude statement culminating in the formation of an attitude scale. An attitude statement is a single sentence that expresses a point of view, a belief, a preference, a judgement, an emotional feeling or a position for or against something. Q&A has a great deal of experience in the area of design and analysis of attitude surveys, having undertaken work for a number of companies. The way that Q&A works with clients is to develop scales, or use existing attitude scales, and test for their reliability when the data has been captured. This provides the confidence that we are accurately measuring what we are attempting to measure, for example, job satisfaction. Scales developed and customised with the client are then piloted with a small but representative group of individuals to test for internal consistency. We also recommend that information on age, gender, length of time in the organisation, functional role etc is captured when undertaking such a survey so that comparisons can be made between groups of people. Q&A can analyse, write reports, provide tabulated information and present results in a graphical format. The following figure shows the attitudes of people who are working with an organisation that has gone through a recent change initiative. The bars on the positive side of the scale are statements that respondents generally agree with - the longer the bar the stronger the agreement. The bars on the negative side of the scale are statements that respondents generally disagree with.
The Q&A team has undertaken a number of attitude surveys for organisations, including:
